Paul Anderson

At a celebration of the new millennium, I unveiled what was to become a new direction for my work.  Today, what you are experiencing, is the product of years of exploration into the effect I have named KOLUSION, a word which combines the three principle phenomena employed in my work.  Kinetics, Optics, and Illusion.

The inspiration, for what would eventually become KOLUSION, occurred at a children's science museum in San Francisco, called the Exploritorium.  Children had discovered amongst many sophisticated exhibits, a simple oil drum, which had been cut in half and mirrored on the inside.  While passing by this cylindrical mirror, children would pause, then quizzically and with glee experiment with the reflection of their own image.  I had assumed this to be a simple funhouse mirror, but soon realized it to be more than a distortion, but an actual transformation that produced the sensation of an added dimension.  Could this encounter provide the insight needed to accomplish a long-imagined goal?

For years I had been creating three-dimensional forms with various materials from small sculptural studies to actual buildings.  Eventually, computer 3D simulations became an integral part of my design process.  Having developed the necessary skills to operate this powerful tool, I was able to create and then manipulate objects within an environment that looked and felt real.  I attempted to imagine a way in which a casual observer could become involved in the formulation of an image, seemingly at will, and then to creatively participate without burdensome technology.  That day in San Francisco, what was to become KOLUSION, emerged.
